Nebraska Bill of Sale — Free Template & Generator

Nebraska is one of the states that requires a bill of sale on every private vehicle sale. The DMV’s own form says “Individuals transacting a motor vehicle transfer of ownership must complete a Bill of Sale at the time of sale” — and adds that you are “NOT, however, required to use this Bill of Sale form.” Any complete bill of sale will do, or the Department of Revenue’s Form 6. The generator below produces one with the price, date, vehicle and both parties, plus odometer and as-is terms.

  • Bill of sale requirement Required at the time of sale; the DMV form is optional

The DMV’s form carries the rule in its footnote: “Individuals transacting a motor vehicle transfer of ownership must complete a Bill of Sale at the time of sale. They are NOT, however, required to use this Bill of Sale form. This Bill of Sale form is made available by the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles as a courtesy.” The transfer page puts it on the seller: “The Seller must also provide the buyer with a Bill of Sale or a completed Nebraska Department of Revenue Form 6 – Nebraska Sales/Use Tax and Tire Fee Statement.”

  • Who signs the title Every name on it, with liens released first

“To transfer ownership of a motor vehicle, motorboat, ATV or minibike, all names that appear on the Certificate of Title must sign off in the Seller’s section of the title.” Open liens “must be released by the lienholder and County Official on the face of the title prior to reassignment of the title to the new owner.” The buyer’s name, address and signature go in the purchaser’s section; a title signed by the seller with the purchaser section blank “is considered open.”

  • Odometer The seller completes the title’s odometer section

“The seller is responsible for completing the Odometer Certification section of the title.” On most Nebraska titles the Seller, Purchaser and Odometer sections appear in the lower half on the face of the title.

Nebraska DMV — Transfer of Ownership

  • Buyer’s deadline 30 days for the title and the sales tax

“A Certificate of Title must be issued within 30 days of the date of purchase.” For vehicles other than mobile homes and cabin trailers, “the sales tax may be paid within 30 days of purchase.”

How this document fits Nebraska’s paperwork

Official form: DMV Bill of Sale — Bill of Sale (State of Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles). Made available “as a courtesy”: sale price, date of sale, year, make, model and VIN, and each party’s name, address and signature, with a seller’s warranty of lawful ownership. Each signature has a “Subscribed and sworn before me” block for a notary public or designated county official.

Nebraska requires a bill of sale at the time of sale but not a particular form. The generated document covers what the DMV’s courtesy form asks for and adds the odometer reading and as-is terms. The seller then signs the title together with every other owner named on it, completes the odometer section and hands over the bill of sale. The buyer fills in the purchaser section and has thirty days to title the vehicle and pay the sales tax.

FAQ

Nebraska bill of sale questions

Is a bill of sale required in Nebraska?
Yes. The Nebraska DMV states that individuals transacting a motor vehicle transfer of ownership must complete a bill of sale at the time of sale, and its transfer page says the seller must provide the buyer with a bill of sale or a completed Department of Revenue Form 6. The DMV’s own bill of sale form is optional — any complete bill of sale meets the requirement.
Does a Nebraska bill of sale have to be notarized?
The DMV’s courtesy form has a “Subscribed and sworn before me” block under each signature, for a notary public or a designated county official. The DMV also says you are not required to use that form at all; its rule is that a bill of sale be completed at the time of sale.
How long do I have to title a car in Nebraska?
30 days from the date of purchase. The sales tax on most vehicles may also be paid within those 30 days; for mobile homes and cabin trailers it must be paid before the title is issued.
Two of us are on the title. Do we both have to sign?
Yes. The DMV says all names that appear on the certificate of title must sign off in the seller’s section. Any open lien must be released on the face of the title by the lienholder and a county official before the title is reassigned.
What is an open title in Nebraska?
A title the seller has signed off on while the purchaser’s information is left blank. The DMV says such a title is considered open. The buyer’s name, address and signature belong in the purchaser’s section at the time of sale.
