The DMV’s Car Seller’s Guide lists: a properly formatted legal title signed over to the buyer; a photo ID matched against the title; the current odometer reading for any vehicle 2011 or newer; a Bill of Sale (VP 104) completed for your records; keeping your own license plates; and a Registration Cancellation and Vehicle Resale Notification through the MyDMV portal.

A Bill of Sale releases interest in a vehicle; a Certificate of Title or other ownership documents must accompany the form. The seller certifies they are the lawful owner, have the right to sell, and will warrant and defend the title against all claims except a lienholder noted on the form.

Since January 1, 2021, federal rules require odometer disclosure until a vehicle is 20 years old, beginning with the 2011 model year. For a 2010-or-earlier vehicle you may check the exempt box on the title; for a newer one you must enter the current mileage in the title’s odometer section when you sell.

Signatures on VP 104 must be originals — photocopies are not acceptable — and changes may not be made once it is signed; any alteration or erasure requires additional documentation. The form asks each party for a Nevada driver license, ID number, date of birth or FEIN, and has no notary section.

The title is what transfers ownership — the DMV form itself says a Certificate of Title or other ownership documents must accompany it.
- Do I have to write down the odometer reading?
- For any vehicle of model year 2011 or newer, yes — enter the current mileage in the title’s odometer section when you sell. For 2010 and earlier you may check the exempt box, because federal disclosure runs until a vehicle is 20 years old, starting with the 2011 model year.
- What happens to my license plates?

- Both our names are on the title — who has to sign?
