Wyoming Bill of Sale — Free Template & Generator
Wyoming is unusual in writing a bill of sale’s wording into statute. When the seller’s title is held by a lender or an auction, a buyer may drive for 60 days on a bill of sale — but only one that follows the format in W.S. 31-2-104(h)(ii), which WYDOT reprinted for county clerks in September 2023. On an assigned title, the grace period is 45 days.

Last verified September 30, 2026- Driving on an assigned title 45 days from the purchase
Citing W.S. 31-2-201(a)(i)(D), WYDOT told county clerks and treasurers that “Every owner, operator or lessee may operate a vehicle without registration for 45 days from the date of purchase/acquisition with a properly executed title for the vehicle that transfers ownership to the transferee.”

- Driving on a bill of sale 60 days, when a lender or auction holds the title
Under W.S. 31-2-201(a)(i)(C) and 31-2-104(h), “Every owner, operator or lessee may operate a vehicle without registration for 60 days from the date of purchase/acquisition with a conforming Bill of Sale if the prior owner’s title is not available for transfer because it is being held by an auto auction or lending institution.”

- The statutory wording Transferor, date, vehicle, buyer, price — and a 30-day title promise
Per W.S. 31-2-104(h)(ii), the bill of sale “has to be signed and be in this format”: “I, (PRINTED NAME OF TRANSFEROR/AUCTIONEER), on (date), hereby sell and convey all my interest, the interest of (name of current owner) in the following described vehicle: (COLOR, YEAR, MAKE, MODEL, VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER) to (PRINTED NAME OF TRANSFEREE) in exchange for: (sales price). I hereby state that the certificate of title for the above described vehicle is held by (…) and that within thirty (30) days, (PRINTED NAME OF TRANSFEREE) will be provided a properly executed title free of all liens for the vehicle unless otherwise specified in this bill of sale.” It ends with the transferor’s signature, address, phone and driver’s license, ID or dealer number.

“Wyoming titles and lien filings are processed through the local county clerk office in the county seat of the county of residence. For specific titling or lien questions, contact the appropriate county clerk office.”
How this document fits Wyoming’s paperwork
Official form: WYDOT does not require a particular bill-of-sale form for an ordinary sale with the title in hand; titles and liens are processed by the county clerk in the county seat of the buyer’s county of residence. For the case where the title is held by an auction or lender, the statute prescribes the bill of sale’s wording, quoted below.
With the title in hand, the assigned title is the transfer. The generated bill of sale is the record of price, date, odometer and terms, and the buyer has 45 days of driving on the assigned title before registering at the county clerk. If a lender or auction holds the title, the buyer’s 60 days of driving depend on a bill of sale in the statutory format. Put the W.S. 31-2-104(h)(ii) paragraph quoted above in the “Additional terms” field, naming who holds the title and promising a lien-free title within thirty days.
FAQ
Wyoming bill of sale questions
- Is a bill of sale required in Wyoming?
- Not for an ordinary sale where the seller signs the title over; the assigned title is what lets the buyer drive for 45 days and then title the vehicle at the county clerk. A bill of sale becomes essential when the title is held by a lender or an auto auction: then a bill of sale in the statutory format lets the buyer drive for 60 days.
- How long can I drive a newly bought car in Wyoming without registering it?
- WYDOT’s 2023 memorandum to county clerks, citing W.S. 31-2-201, gives 45 days from the purchase with a properly executed title, or 60 days with a conforming bill of sale when the prior owner’s title is held by an auto auction or lending institution.
- What must a Wyoming bill of sale say to drive on it?
- It must be signed and follow W.S. 31-2-104(h)(ii): the transferor’s printed name and the date; a statement selling and conveying all interest of the current owner in the vehicle described by color, year, make, model and VIN; the buyer’s printed name; the sales price; who holds the title; and a promise that the buyer will receive a properly executed, lien-free title within thirty days.
- Where do I title a car in Wyoming?
- At the county clerk’s office in the county seat of the county where you live. WYDOT says titles and lien filings are processed there.
- Does a Wyoming bill of sale need to be notarized?
- The statutory format reprinted in WYDOT’s memorandum ends with the transferor’s signature, address, phone and license or dealer number, and has no notary block.
